Useful Strategies for Unclogging a Toilet

February 9, 2015

Nothing can be more distracting and more troubling than having a clogged toilet somewhere in the home. With that said, there are a few simple and essential methods for dealing with a clogged toilet that can help homeowners make the entire unclogging process easier and more manageable. For example, perhaps one of the easiest things anyone can do when it comes to dealing with a clogged toilet is to simply wait prior to flushing.

Method 1: Wait

Because a typical toilet works through the force of gravity it is sometimes best to simply wait a little while and then flush. This may be the easiest and sometimes most effective way of dealing with a clogged toilet.

When the toilet bowl is full of water it exerts pressure on the clog and can effectively repair itself without any intervention. In some instances, homeowners may choose to even wait until the next day to flush as a way to remedy a clog.

Method 2: Wait + Hot Water

Another easy and inexpensive way of dealing with a clogged toilet bowl is to consider pouring hot water into the bowl and then waiting to flush.

Simply pouring a few cups of very hot water into a toilet bowl can provide remarkable results when it comes to correcting a clog. Many experts believe that this can actually help to break down waste that is causing the clog. Once hot water has had time to loosen up a clog it is then simply necessary to flush.

As a note of caution, too much water that is too hot can easily cause a toilet bowl to become brittle and crack.

Method 3: Plunge + Wait + Plunge

Finally, another standard procedure that can resolve a clog in a toilet is to use the age-old tool known as the plunger.

Homeowners should have on hand a flange plunger as opposed to a cup plunger when trying to resolve a toilet bowl clog. The flange type plunger will typically provide a much better seal and will ultimately be more effective in pushing through solid matter that is causing a clogged toilet bowl.

One effective way of getting the most out of the plunger is to attempt to plunge the clog and then wait a short time and try again.
