October is National Fire Safety month and it’s a good time to be reminded of the importance of electrical safety around your home. According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI), residential electrical fires account for an estimated 51,000 fires each year, nearly 500 deaths, more than 1,400 injuries, and $1.3 billion in property damage.

Home electrical fires are typically the result of electrical malfunctions or failures. Some of the most common causes of house fires are:

  • Outdated wiring
  • Space heaters
  • Damaged extension cords

  • Overloaded outlets
  • Outdated appliances
  • Light bulbs that exceed the fixture wattage.

In order to prevent these types of electrical problems it’s important to be able to recognize the warning signs. Some signs to look for are:

Of course, it’s also important to have working smoke detectors throughout your house in case of a fire. Be sure to have your smoke detectors inspected regularly to make sure they still function properly. And, don’t forget to check the backup batteries every year (not just when it starts chirping).

At Parker & Sons, we offer whole home safety inspection services to ensure the electrical system in your home is operating safely. During a safety inspection, our electricians will check your smoke detectors, surge protectors, outlets, wiring, breakers, and the electrical panel. We recommend that you have regular electrical safety inspections to ensure that your home is safe for you and your family.
