You know Elon Musk as the founder of Tesla and SpaceX and a key player in everything from artificial intelligence to Bitcoin! Is the HVAC industry next for Elon?
Last March, Elon Musk tweeted about “wanting to do home HVAC that’s quiet & efficient, with humidity control & HEPA filter.”[1]
Our first thought was that this doesn’t sound very different from OUR high-efficiency HVAC products here at Parker & Sons. For example, we have air conditioners with a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) of up to an almost unprecedented 22 SEER, which means extra-efficient and extra-quiet condenser fans.
Ssh, don’t tell Elon — his dream HVAC system already exists!
Our next step in figuring out whether Ernst already has an HVAC system like Elon’s, is asking ourselves, do we already offer indoor air quality similar to what Elon is proposing?
And we found that in that aspect, we are pretty evenly matched with him, too! Elon proposes cutting edge HEPA filtration system technology. But, so do we! Here at Parker & Sons, we offer a whole-house HEPA air cleaner and filter, the Captura UV Air Purification System. These filters out all kinds of allergens, from dust, to pollen, to tobacco, to bacteria and viruses. The UV technology in the system kills 70 to 85% of germs on first impact. And then, any germs not eliminated on the first impact will be destroyed eventually, as the same air continues to filter through the system. That means the Captura UV Air Purifier will kill 99% of germs. So, unless Elon has something else up his sleeve in addition to a HEPA filtration system in his HVAC plans, we’ve got the upper hand there!
But, we have to admit, the HEPA filter inside Tesla vehicles is undoubtedly very cool. The engineers at Tesla placed a car in a giant plastic bubble, that was purposely contaminated with extreme pollution levels[2]. The engineers then turned on what they call “Bioweapon Defense Mode” in their Tesla, and within two minutes, despite the horrible pollution in the bubble, the inside of a Tesla had good air quality! So, we agree this is an excellent technology, and that it would be interesting to see how Elon Musk might use “Bioweapon Defense Mode” in an HVAC system he invents.
It’s certainly interesting to look forward to the HVAC industry’s future, especially when one of the most fun and eccentric figures in science today is throwing his hat in the ring!
