Critters in Your AC: Lizards, Scorpions, Snakes… Oh My!

Out here in the desert, it’s not uncommon to find animals, such as lizards, scorpions or snakes in your AC system. These critters are able to work their way into a nook or cranny and take up residence, and your AC unit is the perfect place to do that.

Below are some of the ways that animals can cause harm or even lead to the failure of your HVAC system.

Ductwork Holes

Animals can nest in your system’s ductwork and cause tremendous damage by chewing through the ductwork, leaving behind large holes and debris. The holes left behind cause air leaks that will decrease the performance and efficiency of your HVAC system. If the animal is unable to get out and dies in the ductwork, you will not only have to deal with the smell, but also the potential parasites and various bacteria that can spread throughout the duct system.

Corrosion

Rats, mice and other small animals can leave behind urine and droppings, which can be highly corrosive. Not only are you left with a bad odor, but it can cause your metallic ducts to prematurely rust and corrode. Urine and fecal matter can also damage the evaporator and condenser coils of your HVAC system.

Chewed Wiring

Small animals and rodents have a tendency to chew through whatever gets in their way – including your HVAC system wiring. They may even strip away the plastic insulation to use for nesting material. You may not even realize there is a problem until your system quits working. If your unit doesn’t quit working, but the wires’ insulation has been stripped exposing the live wire, it will create a fire hazard.

Regular HVAC maintenance helps in the detection and removal of unwelcome residents before a costly breakdown or repair. You also want to make sure your HVAC system is properly installed – free of unexpected nooks and crannies which critters can slip into.
